Manas Wildlife Sanctuary, Assam, India.(Part II)

Manas Day 2-Morning
The morning arrives...
Common Stonechat (Saxicola torquata)



Male with black head, orange brown breast and white collar, white on shoulders and root of tail. Female dark streakedon underparts. They are usually found in open country, dry, scrub-covered hillside, wasteland, reedy marshes etc .It constantly flicks open tail up and down , as it watches for insect prey from a bush-top or reed stem.

Little Scaley belliedwoodpecker (Picus xanthopygaeus)
A typical woodpecker with stout chisel-shaped bill and stiffpointed wedge-shaped tail. Grass –green above with yellow rump, greenish brownfaintly white barred tail. Crown and crest crimson in male, black in female. Prominentwhite supercilium, black bordered above. Cheeks greyish white streaked withblack. Greenish fulvous below scalloped or squamated with black. Fulvous greychin and throat streaked with white. They largely eat ants, termites, beetlelarvae from cattle dung and flower nectar when available.

Indian Treepie (Dendrocitta vagabunda) The local name inAssamese is Kola Khoa.
A long tailed chestnut brown bird with scooty head and neck.Black tipped grey tail and greyish white wing patches conspicuous in flight. Theyare found in dry and moist deciduous biotope lightly wooded country, gardensetc. They are omnivorous and will take fruits, insects, lizards, frogs,centipedes and even carrion, in addition to the eggs and helpless young ofbirds and rodents.

Striated Grassbird.
The Striated Grassbird (Megalurus palustris) is an"Old World warbler" species in the family Locustellidae. They have a streakedcrown and streaked upper breast. Theyare usually found in grasslands, ricefields and the open country. They areoften found sitting and calling exposed on tops of grasses, bushes andtelephone wires.

Citrine Wagtail (Motacilla citreola).The local name inAssamese is Tooni.
In winter the male and female have grey crown and back withyellowish white underparts. They are differentiated at all times from othersimilar coloured wagtails by the presence of a broad yellow super cilium andyellow forehead. They are usually found in marshes, irrigated ricefields etc

  10. what a gorgeous collection of birds. i always smile when they name a bird and put common in front of it. nothing common about these guys!!!

    i think the treepie was my favorite. these are birds i don't see!!
